Beginner Credit Cards – What You Need To Know

Stepping into the world of credit cards can be an exciting and somewhat confusing experience. With the multitude of  cards available these days it really can be a daunting task to sift through them all for the first time. Before we go looking for the best deal for a beginner there is a few things that you should know about applying for a card and about what you can do to help with the approval process.

The first thing to do is check your credit report. You can do this for free at AnnualCreditReport.com. At this stage your credit report may be nothing more than a blank piece of paper but it is important to remember that this is one major thing that the banks will look at so it is a wise move to ensure that everything is correct and up to date.

Secondly, keep in mind that any bank that you approach for a credit card is going to want to see some sort of record that you can indeed manage money. For this reason it is often advisable to apply for a credit card with the bank that you currently have a savings or checking account with. This is not to say that you need to have large sums of money running through this account, all they want to see is that you can be responsible with your money and are not likely to pose a risk to the bank if they approve your application.

If you haven’t been saving or can’t show any records of your money management skills there are still other options for you. You may be able to go for a low credit limit card or a prepaid credit card. You can use these types of cards to get yourself a credit score and further down the track start looking for a card with all the features you would like. These types of credit cards at least give you a start.

Also, if you do find yourself having trouble getting approved for any type of credit card you could always look to a parent or relative that has a good credit history and ask them to authorize you as an additional card holder on their account. This will help to improve your credit score as long as you don’t get yourself, and your parent or relative, into trouble.

Finally if all else fails you can apply for a secured credit card. This type of card ensures that there is no risk involved to the lender so your application is more than likely going to be accepted, however you do have to supply a security deposit in this instance. A secured credit card will help you with your credit score though making future applications a lot easier.
